On the day of her Presenting, in front of the entire Byern Court, seventeen-year-old Cyrene Strohm’s lifelong plans come to fruition when she’s chosen for one of the most prestigious positions in her homeland—an Affiliate to the Queen.
Or so she thinks.
When Cyrene receives a mysterious letter and an unreadable book, she finds nothing is as it seems. Thrust into a world of dangerous political intrigue and deadly magic, Cyrene’s position only grows more treacherous when she finds herself drawn to the one man she can never have…
King Edric himself.
Well, well, I must say… this book is the first I read by the author and it surprised me. I already liked what I read in the sample chapters and I’m happy I bought the book to continue reading.
Was good, we get a decent lay of the land and know what other regions there are. Environments and scenes were well described, making it easy to follow along and just enjoy the story.
Was good. We got to know plenty of characters, their background, what drives them and how they fit in the story (or so we think). To be honest, I think the worst issue I have with the book is Cyrene herself, she makes the most stupid decisions ever. I mean, seriously, she’s putting herself and her friends in needless danger over and over again, and please don’t get me started on her escapade with Ahlvie! *facepalm*
I really hope she matures and gets a tad (*cough* a lot *cough*) more responsible in the following books.
Were good. There was a nice balance between all the action and conversation to have a smooth flowing story.
All in all, while I might not like Cyrene overly much as she is now, I have high hopes for her in the rest of the series. As such, book nr 2 is in my ever-growing TBR pile đŸ™‚
