Dragons’ Captive

Her Royal Dragon Pack #1

Author:

Alex Lidell

Genre:

Reverse Harem

Blurb:

For once, I thought being an orphaned slave would keep me safe. Yet when the dragon princes come for their promised bride, Lady Cordelia, they take me too. Why? Because they are immortal assholes who like to hoard. But when Cordelia is killed, the dragons have a big if they return without a human mate, theyโ€™ll lose their throne. So we strike a deal. I play bride in exchange for my freedom. All I must do is survive the bridal trials, manage the mating mechanics, and remember that dragon royals are killers, not friends. All I must do is not fall in love.

INTRO:

A new book by one of my favorite reverse-harem authors, woohoo!

Worldbuilding:

This book is set in the same world as the Power of Five, though in a different region, Massa’eve, the Dragon Court. So we have some mention of characters and setting we know. I always love that ๐Ÿ˜€
Dragons are slowly but steadily dying out. They need magic-touched humans even to have a chance at a pregnancy, and only by winning the Equinox trials would they be granted a fertility elixir for their chosen human. Add to that a prophecy that a specific blonde human with wind magic would save the dragons, and you can imagine that everyone wants to bring one of those to the trials and be the savior of the dragons. Nobody more than the four brothers, sons of the current King. And so our story begins…
We learn alongside Kit about the world and who is who, gradually setting the stage and giving us the relevant information. The scenes and settings were clear and well described, making it perfect for immersing yourself fully into the story.

Character development:

Kitterny is just an orphaned slave, nothing more, nothing less, albeit one that is very happy that her lady Cordelia is finally going away with the dragons and that her brand of torture finally ends. Getting not only noticed but taken as well by the dragons… was not part of the plan! But something about her draws the dragon princes in, and they won’t let her go. As I said before, she’s naive and knows little of the world, but that doesn’t mean she is stupid and unwilling to learn. And learn she must… very fast if she wants to survive.
Tavias, the Heir Apparent and the first to make let’s say, a lasting impression on Kit. While arrogant, he would sacrifice nearly everything to save his kingdom and people.
Cyril stands at his brother’s shoulder as his second, while initially, their roles were reversed. A failure from the past still haunts Cyril.
Quinton, the one you won’t see make any movement until you find a sword through your neck or chest… or worse. He is the quiet one of the brothers, forced into a role he doesn’t want.
Hauck is the funmaker and pretty much the black sheep of the brothers. As he has no filter, he is usually the one that takes the blame, but this time, he is also the one whose words result in Kit being taken along to be hoarded by the dragons.
So this is our leading group of characters, and I must say, they were so much fun to read about! They all have such different personalities, but the dragon princes are of one mind about a very simple matter: Kit is theirs, and nothing or nobody is taking her from them…
All the main and side characters feel so very alive, and I like how they progress throughout the story. Very well written!

Pacing & Flow:

I read this book in one sitting, so expect to be pulled in and not let go till the end and then you will (if you’re anything like me) look around and be very bummed the second installment isn’t out yet ๐Ÿ™
Great balance between all the action and the conversation.

The book itself:

The book was well written with no (noticeable) errors. There is no actual sex described, but there is mention of it (if that is important to you).
The book has 180 pages, spread over 23 chapters, and is told from multiple points of view (Kit and the dragons).

Final Thoughts:

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book, and I’m so happy to have another book by the author in this setting! If you like a reverse harem with diverse (and possessive) dragon shifters and a heroine that will grow into her own throughout the series, pick it up! You won’t regret it ๐Ÿ˜€
